Sideline Etiquette: How to Be a Positive Influence on Game Day
Game day is exciting, but what happens on the sidelines can impact young players more than we realize. The way parents and spectators behave can either lift a team up or create unnecessary stress. Here’s how to make sure you’re a positive force on the sideline!
1. Cheer, Don’t Coach
It’s tempting to shout instructions, but leave the coaching to the actual coach. Yelling things like “Shoot!” or “Pass!” can confuse players, especially if it contradicts their coach’s instructions. Instead, focus on encouragement:
✅ “Great effort!”
✅ “Nice pass!”
✅ “Keep working hard!”
2. Respect the Referees
Referees make mistakes—it happens at every level of the game. But arguing with them from the sidelines sets a poor example for kids. If players see parents yelling at the ref, they may think it’s okay to do the same. Instead, encourage respect for the game and its officials.
3. Encourage All Players, Not Just Your Own
Applaud good plays from both teams. Soccer is a sport built on respect, and kids notice when parents support everyone. A simple “Nice save, keeper!” or “Great hustle!” can go a long way in creating a positive environment.
4. Keep the Energy Positive
Frustration is normal, but negativity isn’t helpful. If a player misses a goal or makes a mistake, they already know it. Instead of groaning or criticizing, try uplifting words like:
✅ “You’ll get the next one!”
✅ “Way to stay in the game!”
5. Post-Game Conversations Matter
After the game, kids don’t need a breakdown of everything they did wrong. Instead, focus on effort and attitude. A simple “I love watching you play” is one of the best things you can say.
Sideline behavior shapes how kids experience the game. When parents create a positive atmosphere, players feel more confident and enjoy the sport more. So next game day, bring the energy, show respect, and be the supportive presence your child needs!
